About

A family society, organized in December 1921

The Society of The Lees of Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit historical and genealogical society with roughly 900 members descended from Col. Richard Lee, 'The Emigrant,' and his wife Anne Constable.

Our purpose

The Society exists to promote fellowship among members of the Lee family, to locate, preserve and maintain neglected Lee burial grounds, to gather and publish the history and genealogy of the family, and to encourage the study of the family's part in the history of Virginia and the nation.

Cemeteries in our care

The Society purchased, restored and maintains three Lee family burying grounds: the Burnt House Field cemetery in Westmoreland County, the Cobbs Hall burying ground in Northumberland County, and the Lansdowne graveyard in Urbanna, where Arthur Lee is buried.

Meetings and pilgrimages

Members gather for an annual meeting, for pilgrimages to Lee homes and burial sites, and for commemorative exercises. Registration for these events, along with restricted family materials, lives behind the members-only sign in.

Support

Membership is a one-time life membership; there are no annual dues. Gifts to the Society's Education Fund and Cemetery Fund support preservation work and scholarship.
